I was exposed to this in college. It sounded like a mind going mad - THAT'S what it sounded like to me!

If you think the music is "off" (whatever that could mean), it's because you clearly have no idea what it's saying. This is one of the all-time greatest pieces of music. As usual with Bartók, it's encoded with the very curves and mathematics of botany—of life itself: the Fibonacci sequence. But not in a mechanical way; in a natural, perfect way that always seems inevitable for those with the patience and the brain to hear it. At least you posted the very best performance (and a tremendous recording) of this fantastic piece, which still sounds new—although it's around 80 years old.

If you can listen to this while walking through the woods at night, you're a hero.

That's very nice.  I've been listening to Bartok trying to decide what I think of him, and this is the first piece I particularly care for, and I think maybe I will like Bartok.
