If anything, sampling the greats like Hubbard, Hancock, Davis, Coltrane, and heavily Grant Green has opened the door to learning about music that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Two years ago I listened to "Shades of Blue" by Madlib, took off from there, and because a jazz drummer. The rappers who don't respect the culture wouldn't know to go sample this jazz. But the producers who think "Hey, 'Maybe Tomorrow' would sound great here" definitely know the artist enough to appreciate and honor them.

I saw Freddie at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago (when it was still pretty dilapidated). At a lull between numbers, I screamed from the 3rd balcony, "Play Red Clay!" Freddie looked up and said, "Ha! The sister wants to hear Red Clay!" They struck up the intro and the place WENT WILD!

Herbie Hancock ! The keyboardist of this song is absolutely amazing, and ALL his stuff from his first album Takin' Off, to Maiden Voyage, then HeadHunters, and finally Thrust, and all the 80's stuff he did !

I for one think its great that rappers like Q-Tip and other artists are hip to this and have a love and respect for jazz. How could it be a bad thing that they're taking inspiration and making good music?

My Dad use to listen to this quality piece back in the 70's; and he stated. "It doesn't get better than this!"

This particular cut reminds me of my first time arriving in "Georgia" the drift and glimpse of red clay and the Georgia peach. Oh my my. Cooler then Ice water.

One of the best jazz songs of all time, in my opinion. The 36 folks that don't like this just don't know any better.
