I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it’s your heart, not mine, that’s scarred
So when i go home, i’ll be happy to go You’re just somebody that i used to know
You don’t need my help anymore
It’s all now to you, there ain’t no before
Now that you’re big enough to run your own show
You’re just somebody that i used to know
I watched you deal in a dying day
And throw a living past away
So you can be sure that you’re in control
You’re just somebody that i used to know
I know you don’t think you did me wrong
And i can’t stay this mad for long
Keeping a hold on what you just let go You’re just somebody that I used to know
Anybody who came here from searching for Gotye: welcome to the world of Elliot Smith. One of the greatest musicians of our time. Every song he ever made is a masterpiece and I am jealous you have a new world of enchanting music to explore.
I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it's your heart, not mine, that's scarred
So when I go home I'll be happy to go
You're just somebody that I used to know
You don't need my help anymore
It's all now to you, there ain't no before
Now that you're big enough to run your own show
You're just somebody that I used to know
I watched you deal in a dying day
And throw a living past away
So you can be sure that you're in control
You're just somebody that I used to know
I know you don't think you did me wrong
And I can't stay this mad for long
Keeping ahold of what you just let go
You're just somebody that I used to know
This was powerful when I first heard it, but takes on a whole new level after a divorce after a 20 year marriage... "It's your heart not mine that's scarred. So when I go home I'll be happy to go -- You're just somebody that I used to know," Yes, indeed.
Elliott Smith's lyrics evoke emotions of 'an old soul' - [and I don't believe in souls] - but as young as he was, his lyrics and songs were wise far beyond his years. I can't imagine what else could have come from this amazing genius musician.
I listened to this, and the rest of figure 8, thousands of times riding with my sister to school. I always made fun of her for listening to sad music and being emo. Now I'm back here at 22 after being fucked over by my best friend, and can't believe how much I relate. It's amazing how a different perspective can change not only your taste in music but your understanding of a song.
