Edwin Starr is a holy man. I write in the present tense, because his spirit remains and continues to emanate life supporting positive energies .
Today, more than 50 years after I bought the 45 rpm single, it once again brought tears of joy to my eyes. Edwin, be blessed, exalted brother, you bring a message of love, brotherhood, equality... Back Street says it as well as anything... the lyrics: "where they don't care how much money you have, as long as you're having fun"...
a vision of utopia, a heaven on earth hidden in the back streets:
" bein' a stranger in any town
Is a very lonesome thing
but if I find the back streets of any town
I know I'll find a friend."
In another song, Agent Double-O-Soul, he sings of a boddhisattva, a secret agent who returns people to their true soul. The agents finds a man "who was down on rock and roll, the office put me on his case, and now he's a DJ on a radio show, a station that everybody knows....." The music stuff is an allegory - O O Soul uplifts the souls and makes them shine.
This is "soul music" at its best - giving hope and inspiration, rejoicing.
