In her day, young(ish) men who were artists used to invite sweet young women back to their apartment, to "view my etchings" i.e. to look at their art. And only naughty-girls would agree to do it.
Women were actually not allowed to drink in the "public bar" of the hotels or pubs in Britain, or the Commonwealth countries. Many pubs had "ladies bars" but some towns did not even have that, proper women simply did not drink in public.
The dark brown taste is how she sees the mouth of someone who has over-indulged the night before.
I used to think she said "I want a Spit Tax" instead of "I want to Spit Tacks", but the former is just so ridiculously petty that I think it fits the songs nature even better anyway.
Eartha was one of the very 1st African American artists to break through the color-barrier i n the early 50's. What an incredible talent and trail-blazing artist she was! Thank you for posting this great vid!
