This version of this song introduced me to the awesome sound of Della Reese. Thank you for bringing back some of my favorite memories. I have listened to it four times and just can't get enough.
Just about the most fun you can have listening to a vocal. Energy, humor, storytelling, great arangement, hard driving band and that voice - that Della Reece totally disticntive treatment. Love the pleading request "How come we can't we just do it one more time?". I listen to this verion over and over and love it every single time - a great rendition thanks to Della Reece and "Mr. Sid Bass". Hey, Della - I'm from Missouri too - Kansas City in fact.
If this don't make you laugh and cry at the same time, then you ain't from Missouri. I especially love it when she says, "I got news for you, I'm from Missouri too! So, suddenly, I got doubts!" It just doesn't get any better than this. If this don't move you, then you might be dead. For real.
When I was a kid, they had a record club; this is one of the records I bought. Didn't
know anything about her. But played it over and over again. Jack Teagarden,
Dave Brombeck, Miles Davis. But it exposed me to a whole new world of music. Jazz and soul music. Thanks Della.
The first time that I heard it was at Illusions: The Showplace of the South, performed by Tiffany Ariagus. Fell in love with the song the first time that I heard it too! Great song!
What a goddamn powerhouse
I love contemporary music as much as the next guy but I'd be hard pressed to come up with a modern song comparable with the badassery of this one
Makes me want to travel back in time and kick it with Della Reese
