The first time I met the blues face to face I was five years old. My mother brought this regal looking 45 rpm record in the house and put it on the spool. It dropped down onto the turntable and I watched the needle drop gently onto the record. What I heard next was a heartbeat, a guitar, and a voice so menacing that I thought someone was going to get their butt whipped. By the time he growled, "Look at the people," I thought to myself, "Boy, is she gonna get it!" I asked mom who was singing this song, since I couldn't read yet. She answered, in a soul-satisfied voice, "Bobby BLUE Bland." I have lived a while since then and I still think that "I Pity the Fool" is the greatest blues record ever made. I mean that!
