Bob was a singer in the late big band era who went solo in the early 50s recording the Nearness of You and My Love Song for You. for Capital Records. He died in 1997 of pneumonia at 71. He was born in Philadelphia PA and named Manny Levin. He took Bob Manning as his stage name
Just posted this on another channel:
My all time favorite singer. I am surprised that no one has commented on Monte Kelly's arrangement. Unfortunately, arrangers are unsung heroes behind singers. This version came out in January, 1953 and you have to give credit for this wonderful arrangement behind Bob at this time. The arrangement is timeless and could be an arrangement done today behind a singer doing a standard classic song. This also applies to most classic movies. Outstanding film scores that no one paid attention to or even bothered to know who they were unless it was a very popular musical film. I have EVERY RECORDING Manning did on 45s, including his main album for Capitol called, "Lonely Spell." His singles are so much better than his album. He recorded for MGM, RCA Victor, Everest...and I am sure there are many bootleg copies of his singing.
Such a fine voice. Whenever I hear him sing it it as if the lights grow dim around me. In a good way. America had so many distinctively wonderful singers in he past! Mr. Manning was one of them. Thank you!
The song is genius. Remarkable tune and lyric are bonded to suggest a tribute to a long standing relationship.
It suggests romance, perhaps idyllic, but possible for those younger to understand by hearing this amazing confession, heartfelt surrender of romantic love so well captured in 36 measures.
Advice to young couples:
If you cannot relate to this lyrical masterpiece, perhaps you should put off becoming engaged.
I remember listening to this number in 1954 in Bangalore, India, on the "Binaca Hit Parade". Amazing how music brings back memories long lost.
Thanks for posting. Great.
This is my grandpa! His daughter Beverly Manning Owens is my mom. I can't sing but he gave me his musical ability on the piano. Unfortunately I never got to meet him. Maybe one day in heaven. I have piano videos on my channel if you wish to hear.
