We were waltzing that night in Kentucky
'Neath the beautiful harvest moon
And I was the boy who was lucky
But it all ended too soon
As I sit here alone in the moonlight
I can see your smiling face
And I long once more for your embrace
In that beautiful Kentucky waltz
Interesting! At my house we did the same when I was a kid. My brothers could play most any instrument. They would play this song and my oldest brother would sing. I could neither play nor sing, but I was a good listener.
Wish I was into bluegrass music when Bill Monroe was alive, what an awesome singer and musician. At least I can listen to his music. Beautiful song too.
“It’s amazing when you listen to the early recordings of Hawaiian music. In 1916, John Kameaaloha Almeida & His Hawaiians recorded a song entitled ‘Pua Lilia.’ Thirty years later, Bill Monroe actually took the melody from ‘Pua Lilia’ note-for-note and recorded it as his song ‘Kentucky Waltz.’”-Peter Rowan
This tune actually inspired Red Stewart and Peewee King to create the Tennessee Waltz back in 1947. Patti Page picked it up in 1950 and made the Tennessee Waltz a classic.
