For some reason I've never heard this song before. I only know it from a short segment that's played at Harry & Joe's ("Where Good Liquor Flows") in the film "Lost Weekend". Alcoholic Ray Milland is desperate for liquor and finds a matchbook for this bar, and goes there. He orders his usual Champagne Cocktail but has no money to pay for it, so he tries to steal money from a woman's purse that's next to him, but gets caught. The bouncers throw him out, and to distract the patrons from this interruption, the piano player strikes up this song and changes the words to "Somebody stole her purse / Somebody stole her purse / Somebody came and took it away..."

Love it and thank you so much for posting if for all of us. My dad, Bill Rosenberg, saw him in person back in the 30's and 40's. When my dad was in Caifornia, her perdicted that this man would become a legend. He told me that in NY or New Jersey that Benny Goodman was in one theater and down the street was Artie Shaw.
