When I was a child I heard about this from my Grandparents who were children when it happened. They had immigrated through Elias Island so their fathers could find work in Northern Michigan either in the copper mines or in something a part of the state from Finland and Croatia.
Since first hearing this track in 1972, I can not look at a Christmas Eve moon and not remember these lyrics. Woody's writing and Arlo's performance are profound. Some stories should never be forgotten.
if anybody is interested in learning about this story and more of that are true that have been written and sung by Woody Guthrie there's a book called: "Three Strikes" about the Ludlow strike Massacre and others.. with fellow contributors to the book as well, it's a nice read about a tragic past.. + As they say "if you don't learn from the past you are doomed to repeat it.".
I always say cheers and peers, not sneers or tears! 2 U All + "P.L.U.R*." 2 All...
