I've always loved the story about how the melody of this wonderful song came to be written. The film was in mid-shoot when everyone connected with it realized that they had something truly remarkable in the oven. Up until then, Otto Preminger (the director) had intended to use Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" as Laura's signature song; but David Raksin, who was writing the film's score, had always felt that it deserved its own original theme. Preminger said to him: "This is Friday. If you can come up with something suitable by Monday morning, we'll use it." Raksin went home, and created this exquisitely haunting melody over the weekend. Any man who could write this, AND the score to "The Bad and the Beautiful" was truly kissed by the gods in his cradle.
