I read a story that John Entwistle was on his honeymoon at the time they recorded this so Roger Daltry played bass on the recording.

First time hearing this.. it sounds great! Is that a echo/delay effect on Pete's guitar playing the main riff?

The Who recorded covers of both "The Last Time" & "Under My Thumb" as a double-sided single, the intention being to help Mick & Keef make bail after getting busted on drug charges -- But by the time the single was rush-released & made available, The Glimmer Twins had been sprung.....Ahh the folly of youth.

The Who covered this and "Under My Thumb" -- as a double A-side single, no less -- to show support to Rolling Stones songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who were facing harsh (and thus much-publicized) jail sentences during June 1967 for narcotics possession at Richards' Redlands estate which had occurred four months earlier... both members' sentences were overturned, thankfully!

No The Who did this cover as a show of support to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards who were being held in England on drug charges.
