Great song. Based on a fictional person but her statue can be seen at Suffolk St in Dublin. I had to look it up but a 'cockle' is a small, salt water clam.

I remember somebody singing this to me when I was so young I can't remember who it was. The most distinct memory I have is seeing the drunk guy in A Clockwork Orange singing it, but that definitely wasn't it...Lovely song.
