A lot of people didn't like this when it came out. It was so different from Sly's other stuff, easy melodies like his song "Dance to the Music"When I say they didn't like this, I mean the entire album "There's a Riot Going On." In fact, when I heard it in 1971, I didn't like it either. However, now I think it is a great Masterpiece. I think it is the first avant-garde funk album in history. A great artistic accomplishment. This album is genius. This album is now know as one of the top 50 albums of the last 50 years.

The breakdown at 2:11 is one of the greatest breakdowns of all of music.

Early "slap" bass funkiness! Larry Graham on bass.

Ironically sad that this album, especially the title is still applicable here in 2020.

whenever I listen to this, I imagine a herd of cartoon lions running towards a large body of water under the African sun circa 1970

I remember cranking this super loud all by myself in the work truck while heading up North. I swear I lost some hearing on this track. Loudest the speaker would go.
