Used to sit in the dark basement of my house as a teenager in '68 and listen to this endlessly

Back in the 1960's we didn't have FM radio in Northern MN yet.  To get the latest music, we had to park at the top of the main street late at night, (in front of the MP&L bldg), and listen to Clyde Clifford's Bleaker Street on clear channel KAAY from Little Rock, Arkansas.  Dr John was one of our favorites:

Standing 10 yards from Dr. John and the 'Gris-gris' performing this tune, in 1968, enchanted me. Permanently.

I’ve always played the whole album when I’ve moved to a new house. Gives the house a vibe that you’ve arrived & it’s all good I believe in that shit

I was 15, living in Chicago, foregoing lunch to buy LPs. I was mystified by the cover: who is this character? And bought this album unheard. I'd lie on the floor with my ears between my portable stereo speakers and go into another world. "Put gris-gris on your doorstep, soon you'll be in the gutter, melt yo heart like butter, and-and-and I can make you stutter." Dr John cast his spell.

R.I.P. Night Tripper. I had the absolute privilege of seeing Dr John at Glastonbury Festival in 1984. I owned the Gris Gris album and I'd watched him on The Last Waltz film ripping up "Such a Night", so I knew I liked his music. I waited for his set with anticipation. What happened when he and his band came on will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was all low-key and subtle as hell, but as they played the sky seemed to close down to form a ceiling, the darkening landscape rushed in to meet it and we were all of us in a smokey New Orleans nightclub on a roasting summer night. Never before or since have I witnessed musicians creating such an atmosphere with their pure artistry. Unforgettable.
