Didn't know the great Jolson co-wrote, let alone sing, Avalon. Such a lovely classic song. Always admired it.

He was from Baltimore, My beloved Aunt Dora Mestesky Ackerman dated his brother who owned a drug store; he was a pharmacist in Washington, D.C.. She was much younger so she never met the great Al Jolson. Coming from a religious family, Olson defied his parents by not becoming a Cantor. From the movie, it looks like they were proud of his accomplishments. Who knows for everything is how it is perceived

One of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen or will ever see again. Jolson put the roar into the roaring 20s for sure, charismatic, powerful and melancholy too, he could hold an audience in a trance, bring joy and laughter to any crowd and he knew how to charm them with his personality and smile. Jolson made things happen.Truly a genius.

Al Jolson had to pay for copyright infringement to the publisher of Puccini's Tosca opera (the aria was " E lucevan le stelle")

Jolson was sued by Puccini (his publishers) for copyright infringement , they claimed it was very similar to "The Stars Shine Brightly". must admit I dont see it.
