Fortunate to hear him live in Kansas City late 1960s.  Can't remember if at The Little Theater or Municipal Auditorium.  All I remember is the sound.  Greatest ever.

I bought this record in the 1960's along with various Beatle and Rolling Stone albums. But, you know what, I keep going back to this brilliant trumpet solo.

In 1964, when I was 10, my Dad "cut down" a version of the sensationally popular Java for me to do for the annual Poland (the same towm Poland Spring is in) Community Club variety show. That was when I fell in love with playing the trumpet, rather than just dabbling. Al Hirt had much to do with it. Listen to his recording of I Love Paris for a real thrill.

I dig this rendition, but I also like Clark Terry's version on Serenade To A Bus Seat.

I reminisce sitting in a cafe in New Orleans with a Cajun beauty I met back in 1998 with a great plate of food in front of me and some bourbon on the rocks.
