Its great to hear sing the song that A. P. Carter put together from a mountain tune he heard somewhere.

The Carter Family recordings are truly a national treasure. It doesn't get any more American than this! They have never received their fair share of recognition.

I've heard this song my whole life by Utah Phillips, Roy Acuff, Boxcar Willie, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez...so so many but this is still my fav version.

I agree, the "country" culture that produced this sort of music is pretty much extinct.

Call it country, call it folk, call it hillbilly, or call it Appalachian; this is some of the true roots of American music...

This is the greatest music in the world, and all rock artists should call the Carters their true ancestors.

I wish country music still held its roots like this. I cannot stand contemporary country.

That is Sara Carter singing, as I noticed many think it is Maybelle. She sang harmony and played that famous guitar! Then ole A.P. that wrote and collected so many of the songs (over 300) that we still hear and sing today, comes in there with vocals on many songs. They were the beginning of country music and are still heard around the world! Thank God for their music!!!!

I'm pretty sure that's Sarah singing. She is a treasure. God bless her.

I never tire of this song though I must have heard it hundreds of time. I think I first heard it in 1939 or 40 by Roy Acuff on the Grand Ole Opery. Nobody did it better than the Carter Family. Thanks for the post.

Music like this makes me thank that I'd gladly have been dead for fifty years now if I could have been born and lived fifty years earlier.

I always loved to hear Roy Acuff sing his version of this tune, but this one is just as great.

This is great stuff. I guess from 1929, Jimmie rogers would have been about.
