The Carter Family recordings are truly a national treasure. It doesn't get any more American than this! They have never received their fair share of recognition.
I've heard this song my whole life by Utah Phillips, Roy Acuff, Boxcar Willie, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez...so so many but this is still my fav version.
That is Sara Carter singing, as I noticed many think it is Maybelle. She sang harmony and played that famous guitar! Then ole A.P. that wrote and collected so many of the songs (over 300) that we still hear and sing today, comes in there with vocals on many songs. They were the beginning of country music and are still heard around the world! Thank God for their music!!!!
I never tire of this song though I must have heard it hundreds of time. I think I first heard it in 1939 or 40 by Roy Acuff on the Grand Ole Opery. Nobody did it better than the Carter Family. Thanks for the post.
