Rollins' playing is so unique. Parker's effortless melodic lines and Coltrane's dissonant sheets-of-sound brilliance were both emulated by generations of jazz musicians. But Rollins' playing is so unique - his rhythm so personal and unexpected - that attempting to copy him is all but fruitless. (Not to mention the fact that he changed his own playing dramatically over the course of his life.) My brother once described to me two types of genius, 1) the kind that you could be if only you were 100 times better than you are, and 2) the kind that comes out of nowhere and you couldn't duplicate no matter how good you are. Rollins' playing is of the second type. Even at my best, I can't even think of lines as intricately winding and beautiful as he plays. And Strode Rode is among the best examples of his playing during this era on record. The rhythmic intricacies inherent in his playing are fully on display. Amazingly brilliant and beautiful playing. My favorite Rollins solo on record...
