Song of bravery, song of death, song of the sailor's creed.  How far can sailors fly?

Also, BJ Wilson is vastly underrated as a drummer. He was one of the most technically sound drummers of his error. He didn't have Ginger Baker's powerful style but Wilson was always flawless.

Just one of the best crafted songs ever.  Leaves me with a tear in my eye every time.  They don't write them like this anymore.

Great tune. I love "story" songs with lots of drama.

This song can be seen as a metaphor for wandering lost and finally crying tears of joy when we are found IMO. Masterful!

I've always had their music in my life.. I'm 55 years young however it was my father that first introduced me to the mystical sound of Procol Harum. Thanks Dad

"All hands on deck, we"ve run afloat" I heard the captain cry "Explore the ship, replace the cook, let no one leave alive!" Across the straits, around the Horn, how far can sailors fly? A twisted path, our tortured course, and no one left alive We sailed for parts unknown to man, where ships come home to die No lofty peak, nor fortress bold, could match our captain's eye Upon the seventh seasick day we made our port of call A sand so white, and sea so blue, no mortal place at all We fired the gun, and burnt the mast, and rowed from ship to shore The captain cried, we sailors wept, our tears were tears of joy Now many moons and many Junes have passed since we made land A salty dog, this seaman's log, your witness my own hand

Gary Brooker's vocals on this song may be his strongest of any PH song, including A Whiter Shade of Pale. A truly brilliant piece.

I always thought Procol's music had an otherwordly quality, a melancholically beautiful quality. This song is a perfect example of that. It recalls in a sentimental way a voyage of a sailor. Really few bands were able to express emotions like they did.

A real classic. They did so much more than  A Whiter shade.
