I heard this about 10 years ago on a bossa nova compilation and also became OBSESSED with it. Yeah, the melody is incredible!

WJZZ (formerly WCHD) radio station, Detroit. It's the type of tune that makes you stop with whatever your doing around the house, be still and listen to every note. A beautiful tune, true classic, never forget.

The Ed Love Jazz program. Man we must be getting up there...I first heard this in Detroit around the same time period and fell in love with it. The amazing blend of melody and words that indeed bridge the beauty and longing of heart and soul.

I was in my twenties, young and strong, yet I bawled like a little kid when I first heard this. The lyrics describe(d) my life perfectly - and more than 20 years later, nothing has changed..."I have always been a stranger/and I've always been alone ".

Yes I fondly remember hearing this played on jazz radio in Detroit sometime in the 1970's. For some reason found myself motivated to see if I could find it here. There were also some other interesting versions of it -- especially the one by the Sergio Mendes group who crossed over much more to the general public than Milton's original ever had any chance of doing. In fact ,with the ever growing dominance of rock, it's a wonder jazz radio was able to stay in business as long as it did. We now have a subsidized non-commercial station that plays classical music during the day and Jazz through the night that most people are still too ignorant to appreciate.

I love this artist.  I heard this selection in 1969 in Detroit when I was in my 20's, and I was fascinated with every aspect of it.  I still have the original lp that i bought then, and I am delighted to be able to listen to this song on You Tube.
