I’m really not sure what my old buddy Evelyn would think: she gave her John McLaughlin and Mahabishnu album too me: something about too metaphysically fiery. I didn’t understand her then, and I’m not sure I do now. Of course, it took me until today to realize that the opening themes of this song are drawn from John’s work with Carlos, especially I think, LDS. The next bit of the song, from how I would read it, are the prefigurations inJohn’s own musical cultural world of what linked his own world to Carlos’s different, but somewhat overlapping world. The worlds touch, join and go forth in continued love and devotion. Carlos was on this album, and their love for each other continued into a somewhat new era. “Every step of the way?” Eh boys?
