A blues classic... by the master. To my ear, perfectly executed and recorded. Wunnerful!

jimmy witherspoon on KMET & Dr. demento on KLOS both shows on Sunday nights. Man, L.A. was a magical place in the 70's.

His grandson, Ahkello, was just drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by the 49ers. Saw this song referenced on his draft profile so I had to check it out.

Jimmy Witherspoon was a genius! I still think his version of "Handbags and Gladrags" was absolutely the BEST ever!

This is two sides of a 78rpm record. The second side begins at about 2:53 or so with an alto saxophone solo by Frank Sleet.

This topped the R&B charts in 1949 and was on the black-owned label Supreme. Other black-owned labels of the '40s included Exclusive (Joe Liggins' R&B chart-topper "The Honeydripper," Charles Brown, etc.), Excelsior (Nat "King" Cole, Charles Mingus, etc.), Peacock (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, etc.), Down Town (Lowell Fulson, etc.), Southern (Tab Smith, etc.), and Swing Beat (Ray Charles, etc.).

Jimmy Witherspoon was the guy who turned me on to the Blues, back in 1972 he had a Sunday night Blues radio show on KMET  in Los Angeles.  I was 17 and thought, this music has so much feeling and soul. Next day I bought a harmonica and have been playing and listening to the Blues ever since that night.

Real deal here, kids. You can hear him in thousands who came after him. Respect.
