One of the coolest motherf**kers ever to pick up a guitar. The Buddy Holly glasses, the suits, the mannerisms. Just oozed coolness. Absolutely love it

Reading some comments here I find a total misunderstanding of what this song is about. The title Oliver’s Army gives the biggest clue, but even the importance of this appears to have gone unnoticed. Oliver is Oliver Cromwell, the dictator who overthrew and replaced the monarch Charles the 1st, in the British Civil War. Dictator because in part for the continuation of maintaining ‘Britain’ as a Colonial entity. Ireland as a whole remaining ruled in the same way as monarchs had always done, by brute armed force. The song is about young especially unemployed youth, being used in the British army as cannon fodder. And being expected to serve as an army of occupation in the 6 Counties of north east Ireland, as per the British army of Oliver Cromwell.

Don`t let the politcally correct snowflakes get their hands on this song or Rape Me by Nirvana.

When my dad was in secondary school, him and his friends would put on chemistry goggles and sing this song’s chorus, as they all decided said goggles made them look like Elvis Costello.

Have they slowed this down? There's something off about it.

As a former member of "Olivers Army" who left the British Army at exactly the same time as this record was released, I actually love this song. This is the label on the tin which we all signed up for, in order to escape the tedious existence of unemployment in the UK. In my "Brick" in Northern Ireland we had soldiers from every country in the UK (including NI) and I was proud that we ensured that nobody died in Armagh during our 3 month tour there in early 1978.
