This song is hard to listen to, but I love it, because I share a similar experience to Lauren. Maybe I’m far off, but after hearing she had an emotionally abusive relationship, the meaning to this song, at least what I think is the meaning, is rather sad and so relatable.
Basically, being emotionally abused, especially from someone like a narcissist is traumatizing, and makes you think you’re the problem. “Keep you away from the down side of me” means she has to fake it in hopes things will change how they use to be. Hence “I never do what I use to”. It makes her feel she has to be different to change the abusive lover back to how they were at the start. The song starts with “not the same. You’re not the same” repeated. Then “I believe and tell myself to think forward” is basically believing things will go back to how they use to.
A very sad song, yet so beautifully written and performed.
