Damn how did this become one of my favourite songs so quickly

back in the early 50's my Dad used to sing this to me right before bedtime and I always cried because I didn't want to go to sleep ....:) I'll always remember this song...

The governor of Texas gave Leadbelly a pardon because he played the guitar so well!

This song got him out of Angola ,Louisiana State prison.

It's a pretty catchy tune. I've heard instances of people humming it long after they died.

My work often plays this when we’re about to close up

I've loved this song ever since I was about 7 or 8, back in the 40s, but heard it as a country western song. So much better in its original blues style!
