I could be glad that he gave it back to Mickey Newbury. Jerry hated it!

This one is also better than Willie Nelsons

Jerry always adds a little spark to the song and makes it rock. I especially like how he can take a sad Hank Williams song and make it happy

I came here through a comment from the song performed by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. This is nice too.

This song was originally recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis on the Album "Soul My Way" on Smash Records, released June 15, 1967.  As far as I can determine Teddy Hill;s (a great version) version was released in October, 1967.  This aside, to me the most authentic and entertaining version is the live one by the author of the song, Mickey Newbury.

I came here because of Billy Joel interviewing Don Henley. Henley mentioned running into Kenny Rogers in TX about the time this song was released - Henley mentioned that Mickey Newbury wrote the song and when I was checking out Newbury I read that JLL was the first to record this gem.
