i personally like when artists do that, it kind of adds a new layer to the piece.
look up the lyrics to semi-charmed life if you havent already. its kind of disturbing considering how happy the song sounds.

Honestly I really like this song. I'm not saying that one of the two versions is better, but I get why people might not like this song. Sure, it's a bit too happy for the lyrics, but it has quite a catchy tune to it. And I think this song also has a special element to it. Travie sings in a tone that implies that he feels sad about the same past events as Kiedis (both had a drug addiction), and Travie sings as if he feels a bit ashamed of it, but wants to move on. That gives the song a unique twist.
People who hate this song, hate it if you want to, but please don't actively try to get people to hate this song if they like it. Neither GCH nor the RHCP would want that.
