Say what you want about Paul Gonsalves. Yes he had substance issues. But what he did for Duke Ellington st the NJF in '56 cemented his bond with Duke. Ellington apparently didn't like the fact that Paul embarrassed him and the band on these occasions. However,Duke felt so much gratitude to Gonsalves for what amounted to resurrection for Ellington's band and career..he could not find it in his heart..no matter the shame on his name...to kick Paul Gonsalves out of the band. Ellington stayed loyal.

He didn't get fired. Actually Ellington was willing to put up with this sort of thing, and not just from Gonsalves. Duke so valued the powerful individuality that guys like Gonsalves and so many others brought to his band that he was willing to overlook a lot...a real lot. Stuff like nodding on the bandstand, missing sets or even entire gigs, even being cursed on stage by a sideman. This video aside, Paul joined the band in 1950, and stayed until his death in 1974.

Apparently, he also fell asleep at a Chicago concert. Prodded awake, he stumbled to the solo microphone just as Ray Nance was finishing his solo.Hearing the audience applaud, he thought he had already played his solo, bowed and went back to his seat!

Great jazz composition written by Puerto Rican musician and composer Juan Tizol from Vega Baja, Puerto Ririco. He also wrote Caravan. His interpretation with the trombone, his vibrato was unique.
