My navy buddy from NYC and I were returning to Charleston, SC after a weekend at his home in the city. We took a train back, in the club car George recognised Al at a table with the only two seats open. We asked if we could sit with him and he said he didn't mind. George knew who it was, I had no clue. He asked Al if he would grace us with a song. He said if you sing and dance up on the bar I will sing all night. George jumped right up there, who knew he could tap dance and he did a number. Al followed with this song and many others and the whole club car rocked that Sunday night in the spring of 1965. He didn't need any band to sound great. Never forget that evening.

If any of the struggling artist out there want a number one hit - this is it! Unchained Melody has been recorded many times by many different singers, and it's always a hit - always. Thank you posting and the mem'ries.

This is the original - I'm 73 and I remember it well.  The Righteous Bros is good too - it was magical in Ghost -  but this was the original and still gives me goose bumps.  I wore out the 45 - twice.

My favorite from the fifties. No one can do it as well as Al Hibbler.

I'd heard this song for years as done by the Righteous Brothers, but never really heard it until I heard Al Hibbler sing it! Beautiful, and with none of that overwrought vocal noodling that obscures the real melody.

Hibbler recorded in an era when there was little if any "sweetening" of the recording session. He had a pure voice. The mix with the orchestra is great. It's wonderful to hear a PURE performance.

My Favourite version of this song which I first heard if the 1950s. Can't stand all that yodelling stuff on the Righteous Brothers' version.

Back in the late 70's at a revival show at the Felt Forum in NYC one of the acts was Al Hibbler . When he sang Unchained Melody he received rousing applause.

Love the Righteous Brothers--but none can match this version.

This came out in 1955 when I was a 14 year old teenager and just becoming aware of popular music. I couldn't get enough of this song and still can't.
